Using Communication for Inclusive Hygiene: BCC

Behavior Change Communication (BCC) Campaign for WaterAid Cambodia

In 2019, WaterAid Cambodia, dedicated to improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in Cambodia, collaborated with Mangrove Studio to develop a Behavior Change Communication (BCC) campaign. The initiative aimed to promote good WASH practices among individuals with disabilities, who face unique challenges in accessing these essential services.

Our Role: Mangrove Studio partnered with WaterAid Cambodia to create a targeted BCC campaign addressing barriers to safe WASH facilities for individuals with disabilities. Our goal was to raise awareness, foster positive attitudes, and advocate for inclusion in WASH planning.

Challenges:

  • Physical accessibility issues and societal stigma impacting individuals with disabilities.
  • Lack of awareness about the importance of WASH among caregivers and individuals with disabilities.
  • Need to promote behavior change to improve access and adherence to WASH essentials.

Solution:

  • Developed accessible communication materials, including posters, flyers, and banners, distributed across Cambodian communities.
  • Produced an infomercial video featuring individuals with disabilities sharing their WASH experiences, disseminated online and through local media.
  • Targeted caregivers and individuals with disabilities through household visits and small group sessions.

Results:

  • Increased awareness of WASH importance among individuals with disabilities.
  • Successful distribution of communication materials and high viewership of the infomercial video.
  • Positive impact on societal attitudes towards individuals with disabilities and improved inclusion in WASH planning.

Conclusion: The BCC campaign by WaterAid Cambodia and Mangrove Studio effectively promoted good WASH practices, enhanced societal attitudes, and advocated for the inclusion of individuals with disabilities in WASH initiatives. The campaign’s success highlights the power of BCC in driving societal change and improving access to essential services.
