Client: People in Need (PIN)
Project: Early Warning Systems 1294 in Cambodia
Location: Phnom Penh, CambodiaÂ
Project Overview:
The “Early Warning Systems 1294” project, implemented by People in Need (PIN), aimed to enhance the resilience of communities in Cambodia’s high-risk flood areas by promoting the use of the Early Warning System (EWS1294). The project’s objective was to raise awareness about the EWS1294 and its channels, encouraging local populations to subscribe to the system for better disaster preparedness. PIN partnered with media channels to run TV and radio broadcasts as key elements of the project.
Key Features:
- A 30-minute TV talk show aired once on PNN TV Station, promoting the EWS1294 system.
- 32 radio broadcasts were aired over a month, reaching audiences through stations such as Hang Meas, ABC, and Vayo.
- The broadcast content encouraged communities to subscribe to the system and take action during emergencies.
- The recorded TV show was shared on social media platforms to maximize reach and engagement.
- Project outreach included both traditional and digital media channels, ensuring wider coverage.
Results:Â
The project achieved significant success in terms of reach and impact:
- Widespread Awareness: The TV and radio broadcasts, coupled with social media amplification, reached a large segment of the target audience. Many listeners and viewers reported a better understanding of the EWS and its role in protecting lives and property during floods.
- Increased Subscription: A notable increase in subscriptions to the EWS1294 was recorded in the targeted provinces. People began to rely on the system to receive timely alerts, which allowed them to take preventive measures ahead of flooding events.
- Community Engagement: The project succeeded in fostering greater community engagement, particularly with the younger population, who were more active on social media and digital platforms. The integration of digital media ensured that messages were disseminated beyond traditional broadcast channels.
- Educational Impact: The project played a pivotal role in educating communities about the importance of early warning systems in disaster risk reduction. It provided actionable knowledge on how to respond to emergency alerts and engage with local government efforts during floods.
Conclusion:
The “Early Warning Systems 1294” project has made significant strides in improving disaster resilience in Cambodia. By leveraging media channels for effective communication and promoting the subscription to life-saving early warning systems, the project has empowered communities to take timely actions in the face of flood risks. Moving forward, the project’s success highlights the importance of strengthening forecasting tools and building sustainable community resilience for better disaster management.
